Gurukul Definition and System:
A gurukul (Sanskrit guru "teacher" or "master" or "mentor"; kul domain, from kula, "extended family") is a type of school in India, residential in nature, with shishyas (a student or a disciple) living in proximity to the guru, often within the same house. In a gurukul, shishyas reside together as equals, irrespective of their social standing, learn from the guru and help the guru in his day-to-day life, including the carrying out of mundane chores such as washing clothes, cooking, etc. The guru-shishya tradition (parampara) is a hallowed tradition in Hinduism and appears in other religious groups in India, such as Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism.
Typically, a guru does not receive fees from a shishyas studying with him. At the end of his studies, a shishya offers the guru dakshina before leaving the ashram. The gurudakshina is a traditional gesture of acknowledgment, respect and thanks, which may be monetary, but may also be a special task the teacher wants the student to accomplish. In ancient days Prince and Princess, and all the people in a kingdom used to get education in a similar way. Being in a guru's ashram (place where guru/teacher and their students stays) the students learn everything which is essential for life. It is not limited to open-classrooms under a tree, instead apart from theory, they preach and practise the art of war, the art of ruling, economics, science, astrology, and so on.
Which is the reason, in India they say:
“Matha Pitha Guru Deivam” is a very popular adage or phrase in Sanskrit language and often quoted in Hinduism and Buddhism. Translated word for word, it is, “Mother Father Teacher God”. The meaning of this adage is the greatest truth, and is the order in which one should offer reverence.
